"The essence of Jean Luc Tartarin’s art lies in the gradual intermingling of photography with painting – or, more accurately, with the pictorial. Yet the artist does not seek to transcend painting through photography, nor to confer prestige upon photography through painting, in accordance with a now hackneyed chiasmic vision. His aim is different, and a retrospective look at his entire body of work provides the key: that of liberating the motif in order to access the synthetic and synaesthetic spirit of abstraction – the very spirit that dissolves painting and photography into one another, bringing them into the overarching realm of the image."
