The Nosbaum Reding gallery pays tribute to sculptor Bernd Lohaus through a group exhibition that seeks to offer a renewed perspective on his work.

 
In counterpoint to his sculptures made from azobé wood salvaged along the banks of the Scheldt, the exhibition brings together Jacqueline Mesmaeker—architect of the structure of the line—and a group of contemporary artists: Luca Dal Vignale, Tina Gillen, Priscilla Gils, Karsten Krogh-Hansen, Gijs Milius, Ute Müller, Nele Tas, and Charlotte Vandenbroucke. Some of these artists are, moreover, graduates of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp. Together, they explore the foundational concepts in Lohaus’s practice: heightened spatial perception, tension and balance in composition, and a careful attention to the object’s presence—with the aim of staging an encounter between two protagonists: the viewer and the object.

 
A singular figure in sculpture, Bernd Lohaus consistently anchored his work in questions of language and the presence of the body, set against a backdrop of sculpture reduced to its mass—blocks whose volumes are articulated with the floor, the wall, the openings and closures of space. The exhibition, which presents both sculptures and paintings, revisits the paradox common to both mediums: the tendency to operate through processes of addition and subtraction in their relationship to material. In what way do Lohaus’s sculptures carry within them a dialogue between forms and a reflection on their history? And how do these assemblages of beams in display mode convey a generational legacy—one that persists in the becoming-sculpture of painting and in an ongoing reflection on the frame?

 
These are the propositions the Nosbaum Reding gallery puts forward today through the works of Bernd Lohaus.

La galerie Nosbaum Reding met à l’honneur le sculpteur Bernd Lohaus par le biais d’une exposition collective qui s’attache à proposer une perspective renouvelée sur son travail.

En contrepoint de ses sculptures en bois d’azobé récupéré sur les bords de l’Escaut, Jacqueline Mesmaeker architecte de la structure de la ligne et des artistes actuels : Luca Dal Vignale, Tina Gillen, Priscilla Gils, Karsten Krogh-Hansen, Gijs Milius, Ute Müller, Nele Tas, Charlotte Vandenbroucke — certains de ces artistes sont d’ailleurs issus de l’Académie royale des Beaux-Arts d‘Anvers — questionnent les concepts fondateurs du sculpteur : perception accrue de l’espace, tension et équilibre dans la composition, attention à la présence de l’objet, afin de faire se rencontrer ces deux protagonistes, le spectateur et l’objet. 

Bernd Lohaus sculpteur singulier n’a jamais cessé de relier son travail à la question du langage et de la présence du corps en arrière-plan d’une sculpture réduite à sa masse et de blocs dont les volumes s’articulent au sol, au mur, aux ouvertures et aux fermetures des espaces. L’exposition qui présente sculptures et peintures revient sur ce paradoxe commun aux deux médiums celui de procéder souvent par addition et soustraction dans leur relation au matériau. De quelle manière les sculptures de Lohaus portent en elles un dialogue entre les formes et une réflexion sur leur histoire ? Et comment ces assemblages de poutres en display répondent d’un legs générationnel qui se poursuit dans le devenir sculpture de la peinture et d’une réflexion sur le cadre ?

Galerie Nosbaum Reding eert het werk van beeldhouwer Bernd Lohaus middels een groepstentoonstelling die een hernieuwde blik op zijn werk biedt.

In contrast met zijn sculpturen in azobé hardhout, gerecupereerd aan de oevers van de Schelde, tekent het werk van Jacqueline Mesmaeker aanwezig, architecte van de structuur van de lijn. Werken van hedendaagse kunstenaars als Luca Dal Vignale, Tina Gillen, Priscilla Gils, Karsten Krogh-Hansen, Gijs Milius, Ute Müller, Nele Tas en Charlotte Vandenbroucke – sommigen afgestudeerd aan de Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten in Antwerpen – stellen de grondbeginselen van de beeldhouwer ter discussie: een verhoogde perceptie van de ruimte, spanning en evenwicht in de compositie, aandacht voor de aanwezigheid van het object, en dit om de twee protagonisten - de toeschouwer en het object - samen te brengen.

Bernd Lohaus, een eigenzinnig beeldhouwer, heeft zijn werk altijd in verband gebracht met de gegevenheid van taal en de aanwezigheid van het lichaam waarbij de sculptuur teruggebracht werd tot zijn massa en blokken waarvan de volumes zich articuleren in relatie tot de vloer, de muur, en openingen en eindes van de ruimte. De tentoonstelling, die sculpturen en schilderijen toont, komt terug op deze paradox die beide media gemeen hebben; met name dat deze media vaak werken met toevoeging en aftrekking in hun relatie tot het materiaal. Op welke manier dragen de sculpturen van Lohaus een dialoog in zich tussen de vormen en een reflectie op hun geschiedenis ? En hoe beantwoorden Lohaus’ assemblages van balken eens tentoongesteld aan een generationeel erfgoed dat voortduurt in de sculpturale toekomst van de schilderkunst en een reflectie omtrent het kader?

Dit zijn de voorstellen die galerie Nosbaum Reding heden richt in betrekking tot de werken van Bernd Lohaus.
